Search engine optimisation can feel like a moving target, but the fundamentals for a small business are simpler than the industry makes them sound.
Start local. If you serve a specific area, claiming and fully completing your Google Business Profile — hours, photos, categories, and replying to reviews — usually moves the needle faster than anything else.
Make sure your site actually answers the questions your customers search for. A page built around "what we do" reads very differently, and ranks very differently, from one built around "what a customer wants to solve."
Technical basics still matter: a site that loads quickly, works on mobile, and does not throw errors gives search engines and visitors one less reason to leave.
Content built around real customer questions — in blog posts, service pages or FAQs — compounds over time in a way that paid ads do not. It takes longer to show results, but it keeps working long after you publish it.
Track a small number of things consistently: search ranking for a handful of key terms, organic traffic, and how many of those visitors actually enquire. That is enough to know if your SEO is working.
